I am originally from Maryland and West Virginia. I came to Star Valley to help build a house during the summer of 1976 after my second year at West Virginia University. I immediately fell in love with Wyoming, and so that fall I went back, packed up my belongings, and relocated to Star Valley.
My love for building began in 1972. I was given a book for my birthday that detailed the building of a small log cabin. Conveniently my family owned 600 acres of property in West Virginia, and so a suitable building site was chosen and the project began. While I didn’t realize it at the time, this was the beginning of Robert Point Construction. My first “employees” were my fourteen year old brother, two good friends who were fifteen at the time, and my sixteen year old self.
Lacking any instruction other than what we were able to glean from the well-worn pages of the “Foxfire” book, and possessing only rudimentary tools, we turned out our first project; a 16×28′ log cabin. It was a bit rough around the edges, but turned out great considering.
In the beginning, I worked both on my own, as well as with other contractors in the area. During this time, I learned a great deal about all aspects of residential home construction, particularly construction techniques suited for building homes in the harsh climate of the mountains of Wyoming. In 1985 I began a fifteen year tenure with Weber Construction in Jackson Hole. During this time I worked exclusively on high-end luxury log homes in the Jackson, Teton Village, and Wilson areas, approximately eight of those years were spent as a project manager for the company.
The experience that I gained during this time in my career would prove to be invaluable in my development both as a craftsman and project manager. The quality and complexity of these projects demanded a great attention to detail, as well as considerable interaction and coordination amongst the client, architects and sub-contractors. In 2001, I decided that it was time to form my own company and continue to specialize in and provide high-end luxury home construction in the Star Valley area, thus Robert Point Construction was born.
